Gateway Theatre’s location in the centre of Bukit Merah carries on a rich history of storytelling. The “Legend of Redhill”, one of the most well-known tales in the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals), tells of how the area got its name following an ancient conflict between the local fishermen and violent schools of swordfish. In keeping with its unique location in the heartlands, the building’s architects, ONG&ONG, designed Gateway Theatre to be filled with open, inviting spaces that blend seamlessly with the vibrant community that surrounds it. The innovative design of the building complements the inclusive nature of Gateway Theatre’s programming in fostering connections with different groups in the community and making the arts accessible to everyone.
